Step back in time and discover New Zealand's Castle.
Built in 1871, the exquisite craftsmanship and architecture of the Castle is a gothic revival masterpiece. With new world echoes of old-world grandeur, the Castle is wrapped in lace verandahs and offers an insight into Victorian culture at a pivotal time in Dunedin and New Zealand’s history. Yet the story is about more than just a magnificent Castle. It's also a window into the remarkable life of William Larnach and his family.
Our story continues throughout time, with the Castle becoming derelict, until Margaret and the late Barry Barker purchased it in 1967. What began as a passion project sparked a restoration journey that continues today.
Beyond the walls is our Garden of International Significance. Wander the unique collection of specialised gardens includes the Patterned Garden, the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, the Rain Forest, the South Seas Garden, the Alice Lawn, and the Laburnum Arch and Green Room.
Nestled on the beautiful Otago Peninsula, marvel at the dramatic views with viewing points from the garden. Or climb the Historic Tower and enjoy 360 degree views of the Peninsula, Harbour, Dunedin, and Ocean.
