Beautiful Cafè with historic charm
Set in the beautiful grounds of Larnach Castle, the Ballroom Café offers the perfect place to sit and enjoy our historic surrounds.
We are open daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm (except Christmas Day).
The Grand Ballroom story
William Larnach originally built the elegant Ballroom for his daughters in 1886. Kate, the eldest, tragically died of typhoid in Wellington and her body was laid to rest for some time in the Ballroom in a glass coffin. Colleen and Alice left home for Christchurch, so the Ballroom lingered unused by his family as Larnach had envisaged.
Over the past 120 years the Ballroom has had a variety of uses including an antique sales room, and penning of sheep.
Contemporary use with a historic charm
Today the Ballroom is used as a gracious cafè during the day for visitors to the Castle and Garden. With outside seating surrounded by beautiful gardens, this is a perfect location to take a refreshing break from a hectic holiday schedule. Many celebrations take place here, including weddings, balls and conferences.
The Ballroom is magnificently decorated with three large chandeliers, wooden rafters and high ceilings, stag heads and working open fireplaces, all of which provide a historic ambiance of a grand Victorian Ballroom.
Local cuisine
Our delicious menu uses locally sourced produced, and changes seasonally. Beautiful cabinet food includes sandwiches, scones, cakes and slices. We offer a large range of teas, local juices, beers and wine, and espresso coffees.
