About Margaret
Margaret attended Victoria and Auckland Universities graduating with a BA degree. In 1967, with her husband, she bought Larnach Castle which at that time was empty, derelict and surrounded by a tangle second growth. It was at this time, while still in her 20’s, that Margaret developed a passion for gardens and gardening. Over the years, the Barker family restored and furnished the Castle, a garden was created a garden within the historic framework.
Margaret has served on many horticultural and promotional committees including the International Dendrology Society. Margaret has received a number of awards for both business and design. She is an Associate of Honor of the RNZIH and received a QSM for conservation of historic buildings. In September 2008, the garden was rated a ‘Garden of International Significance’ by NZGT. Margaret has been writing a monthly coloum for the "The New Zealand Gardner' for the last five years.
